Batiquitos Lagoon serves as home for many birds, fish and plants and is part of a large coastal ecosystem that will intrigue both children and adults. The activities provided here were created to share the nature of Batiquitos Lagoon with children of all ages. The Batiquitos Lagoon Enhancement Project has help to make sure that important wetlands are restored. Since the early 1900s, the condition of the lagoon was declining. At one time, the tidal lagoon was mostly clean. But people and animals moved into the area, highways, houses and buildings were constructed, and in turn, the lagoon was closed off from cleansing ocean tides. The Batiquitos Lagoon Enhancement Project has opened up the lagoon to the ocean. This has improved the quality of the water in the lagoon. A better habitat for endangered species has been created and more sand has been placed on the beaches.
